Proficient’s latest ERG, PRISM, kicked off the summer with a vibrant celebration and meaningful discussions about Pride and the LGBTQIA+ community. A significant event this year was our “Pronouns 101,” an informative and empowering session focused on understanding and respecting the diverse identities within our community.

Pronouns 101 provided attendees with a deep understanding of pronouns and highlighted their importance in creating a respectful and welcoming environment for everyone. The session began with a detailed explanation of what pronouns are and why they matter. We discussed the importance of using the correct pronouns to show respect and acceptance for each person.

One key topic was the use of neo-pronouns like xe, ze, and even singular they. Gender-neutral pronouns have been in use since at least the 1800s, with the singular “they” dating back to the 14th century.

Some of the best practices reviewed focused on three main components: share, ask, and avoid assumptions. The best thing leaders can do is introduce themselves with their pronouns to normalize the practice. For example, “Hi, my name is Nicole, and I use she/they pronouns.”

Leaders can take it a step further by making this part of introductions with new teams, helping ensure that everyone feels included, seen, and heard.

But what happens if you make a mistake?

Mistakes happen — we all slip up at times. The best approach when you do is to apologize and move on.

Remember that using the correct pronouns and acknowledging them shows that we value each person and help create a more welcoming environment.

Be mindful of gendered phrases. We often use phrases like “Hey guys” or “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen,” which can make people feel excluded or minimized. Great alternatives are using phrases like “Hey everyone,” “Welcome, all,” or “Great job, team.”

Keep in mind that using correct pronouns helps validate identity, affirm personal experiences, and can significantly impact someone’s sense of belonging and safety.

Using the right pronouns is more important than grammar; it’s about recognizing and validating each individual’s identity. This is a simple yet powerful way to show respect and foster a sense of belonging. By making a conscious effort to use correct pronouns, we contribute to a more inclusive and accepting society.

The Pronouns 101 event was a fitting close to Pride Month, reinforcing the values of acceptance, understanding, and respect. As we move forward, let’s continue to build on the lessons learned and promote inclusivity in our everyday lives. By embracing and respecting each other’s identities, we build a stronger, more unified community.
